Families are diverse, made up of all shapes and sizes, values and backgrounds. Within families, there is even diversity as a family may contain people of different cultures, faiths, and origins. Blended, two parents, single parent, same sex, families are a rich and unique mosaic in so many ways. But what all the wonderful varieties of families share is that they are a system, where each person plays an important role and impacts the family. When one part of a system, or a family, isn't working it impacts the other components of the system. Families are often very proficient at problem-solving and implementing a fix for the system. However, when the solutions don't work or there is disagreement about solutions, the family can feel stuck, and that's when outside support and perspective from a family therapist is helpful to get the family back on track.
I have worked with families experiencing:
Challenges related to a blending a family
Ineffective communication and conflict
Differences in goals and values
Lack of connection and time together
Divorce and separation
Shifting and changing roles and family dynamics
Substance abuse, trauma, and school-related issues
And much more...
Family therapy is not limited to families with young children. In fact, I just as often work with families with older adolescents and young adults, as new problems crop up as families move into these stages of life. Families are continuously changing as each member is moving through different developmental stages, introducing new members, roles, and dynamics into the family. It makes sense that families may experience gridlock or conflict on occasion. As a marriage and family therapist, I have extensive experience working with families. I am also a certified parenting coach, and love working with parents to address concerns in this area.
After working together, families report:
Being able to talk honestly and openly
Feeling more inclusive and connected
Having more fun and quality time together
Having more understanding and compassion towards each other
Learning new information about one another, thereby deepening understanding and connection
Implementing healthier boundaries
Feeling increased trust and goodwill
And so much more! If any of the above describes you or sounds helpful to your family, give me a call to schedule an appointment to get your family back on track.
